•Meaningful Monday: Monday is focused on making meaning. Tasks will focus on vocabulary and comprehension. At the beginning of the year, tasks will include drawing a picture to go with the sentence, matching words to pictures, write about the picture, real or nonsense words, and match the sentence to the picture. Some tasks may require students to make meaning in the text, word families, and build vocabulary.Â
•Take a Try Tuesday: Tuesdays lead to Text Structure Tuesday in the above grade levels. In 1st Grade, students will write about the text, write about the picture, complete the sentence, and move into comprehension questions and vocabulary as the year progresses.
•Wordy Wednesday: Wednesday is all about working with words. Tasks include phonics activities and word work.
•Throwback Thursday: Thursday is all about grammar usage and conventions.Â
•Fluency Friday: Friday is dedicated to building fluency. Students will work with sight words, complete cloze reading activities, and poetry activities. Students build fluency through poems, rhyming words, and repeated reading.

About this Resource
This resource is a unique way to get your students warmed up in the morning. The math is aligned to 1st Grade Common Core Standards and meant to be a review. If you teach 2nd grade, this might also work for you depending on your students’ needs. (We do have a 3rd grade version!)
This set contains 5 weeks of March morning work with leprechauns, St. Patrick's Day and Spring themes. The morning work is focused on Math with a sprinkle of Science, a pinch of grammar, and a dash of Daily/Weekly Updates to keep your students engaged continuously reviewing math skills. Additionally, the daily and weekly updates open doors for conversations to help you and your students get to know one another. You can check out the 3rd grade set to get a feel for the upcoming months.
Each week follows the same routine. The focus for each day was created based on fundamental needs we noticed in our classrooms of 3rd and 4th Graders: Place Value, Number Sense, and Fractions.Â
While these are not the only areas addressed, they are the main focus. This has worked so well in our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms that we have branched out into other grade levels. Each week follows the same routine and structure.
*Mathematician Monday-Â Problems are centered around 1st grade math review and problems leading up to the understanding of more complex problems, especially Multiplication & Division. In the 3rd-5th Grade morning work, it is called Multiplication Monday.Â
*Base Ten Tuesday-Â All about the Base of our Number System. These problems are centered around our number system and place value.Â
*Wordless Wednesday-Â No Word Problems! Students have 3 problems without words.Â
*Throwback Thursday-Â Review Day! Other days may offer a review problem, but Thursdays have problems that may come from 1st grade or the beginning of the year. I also added problems from other standards such as Measurement, Data, Geometry, and Number Patterns.
Fun Friday- Nothing says Fun Friday like Math! There is always a need to review. By keeping it short and sweet and including a fun personal question, this may help build your students’ confidence with different math skills while also keeping it fresh. The problems may also lead up to the understanding of Fractions in 3rd grade.
I created this resource in my 3rd grade classroom because I saw a need to continuously review these key areas. By following this same structure each week, students know what to expect while they are also building their confidence in these essential math areas. I have also found several other benefits from this morning work routine:Â
*Routine!-Â My students knew exactly what to do when they come in the classroom.
*Short & Sweet- There are only a few problems so it shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes. This will also let you know if students are still having difficulty with a certain skill.
*Fewer Copies-Â Only one sheet of paper for the whole week! (Copy front and back)
*A Weekly Grade- My students know this and do not want to do the work for homework or have a poor grade. This helped get them started right away in the morning. I also go over the problems each morning and allowed students to fix their work before turning it in. In my opinion, this is beneficial because it keeps the students engaged as we go over it, ESPECIALLY if they had difficulty with it. This was also beneficial for students because if they paid attention and “added on to their thinking,” they will earn a good grade that will be added weekly. For students that already struggle, this is confidence building and motivating.
