✏️ About this Product

This opinion essay unit provides basic opinion writing teaching points and resources based on the Common Core Writing Standards for Grades 3-5. The lesson plans are divided into three parts:

1. Basic Teaching Points: Lessons that can be carried from writing a self-selected opinion piece to writing in response to text. These begin with generating ideas and end with a published piece of opinion writing.

2. Bonus (mini) Mini Lessons: Lessons to be used in small group, conferring, or whole group depending on the needs of your students.

3. Writing in Response to Text: Lessons to be used when writing in response to text or a prompt

This unit provides topic ideas and resources for any opinion piece. You could use a text as a basis for the opinion piece or use this unit to simply kick off opinion writing in your classroom. The writing lessons do not need to be taught in the exact order. Also, some of the teaching points you could use as small group lessons if you find that only some of your students need the lesson.

✏️ Writing Notebook Anchor Charts

The anchor charts included in this product are meant for students to have anchor charts at their fingertips in their Writer’s Notebooks. I don’t know about you, but wall space is always an issue in my classroom. Not only that but storing and keeping track of large chart paper can sometimes stretch our organizational skills to the limits! I have found one of the best ways to support my students is to treat their notebooks like a tool in which they can find the strategies and skills taught whenever they need it. In this way, what we teach our students is not just a one-day occurrence, but they have a “forever tool.”

Personal Narrative Writing Unit {My Life is a Story}

Place Value Practice-The Power of 10 (Notebook Charts & Practice)

What's included?

Place Value Chart through Hundred Millions- (2 Versions) This half sheet could be used as a reference chart for students in their math journal to help with identifying the value of a number and how our place value system works. This chart labels the Ones Period, Thousands Period, and Millions Period. This could be color coded by using colored pencils to help students identify the different periods. This visual seemed to help students SEE the periods. You can see how we glued the chart in our notebooks to the right. We glued only part of the page and then folded over where the millions period is located. Below this chart, we wrote examples of the 3 different forms of numbers (Word, Standard, & Expanded).

The Power of 10 Notebook Chart (Ones through Hundred Millions)- This chart is a visual for students’ Math Journals to show an example of how our number system works, the idea that when you move through place value each digit is 10 times larger than the digit to the right. Additionally, the chart shows a picture of base ten blocks including a large stack of 10 thousands blocks. This was eye opening for my students to deepen their understanding of the base ten concept. (Included as a Notebook Chart & Full Page in case you wanted to use it in your math center.)

The Power of 10 Chart (Hundredths through Millions)- I teach 4th grade and teach place value at the beginning of the year and decimals later on in the year. I used this chart later on in the year to help build on prior knowledge of the place value system. This chart is similar to the one above, except to include decimals and only goes up through millions. (Included as a Notebook Chart & Full Page in case you wanted to use it in your math center.)

The Power of 10 Place Value Practice- This practice (2 pages front and back) offers varying word problems and scenarios that will allow students to practice working with the charts and apply their knowledge about place value. You could use this page to teach, partner practice, independent work, or all of the above, depending on your students’ needs. The answer key is included.

Place Value Practice Chart- This chart can be used in students’ notebooks to practice working with numbers and finding the value of a digit.

This resource is a part of ELA Task Cards Grades 3-5 Bottomless Bundle

These task cards are a great practice for students to practice using prefixes and suffixes within context to determine word meanings. Many of these words are drawn from Science or Social Studies topics to help integrate content areas into your ELA Block. I created these task cards for my 4th Graders, but they could be used in Grades 3-5. Check out the preview to see more information and a picture of how I used them in my classroom.

What's included?

*36 Task Cards to Practice Prefixes and Suffixes- These task cards are perfect for a literacy center, small group activities, or review. Each task card contains 2-3 sentences that uses the words in context. Though there are context clues for each word, the question requires students to understand the meaning of the prefix or suffix. I chose many of the words based on words that 3rd-5th graders may see in not only common literature, but also words from Science and some Social Studies topics.

Answer Sheet & Answer Key: The Answer Key provides the word that was used on the card as well as the answer. This will help you see not just an answer on the answer key, but which word was used. This can help you identify words that students might have struggled with or organizational purposes.

Prefixes and Suffixes Notebook Anchor Charts - Additionally, I have included 2 charts for students' notebooks for Prefixes and Suffixes. These charts come from my Grammar & Vocabulary Notebook Charts resource. Students can use the charts to help them identify the meaning of the prefix or suffix. This is an informational newspaper-style text perfect to teach your students about Presidents Day. and may be used over a few days. The text includes a history of Presidents Day, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.

Bingo
The questions are in a bingo style format. Students read the informational text about Presidents Day, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. Then, they answer questions on the bingo grid. The grid comes in 26 different versions. Having each student use a different version of the answer grid will allow you to reinforce the content of the informational text by playing a game of bingo.

How to Play:
The first page is an answer key, which can be used to play the game of bingo. Cut up each square, place in a Ziploc bag or container of your choice and call out questions. Students must answer the question correctly and have 5 in a row. Up, down, or diagonally. Students can use counters or any treats to keep track of the questions called.

Also Included!
Reading Comprehension Questions: The questions are also in a traditional multiple choice and short answer format. Not all answers are included from the bingo grid and the questions may be slightly different. You would not need to use BOTH formats – pick one or the other.

Pumpkin Science {Physical Science Investigation}

This resource is an engaging and effective way to integrate a fun fall twist into your Science curriculum. I created this resource to use in my 4th Grade classroom during our Physical Science Unit. We used pumpkins to discover, study, and discuss physical properties of matter. We then continued our study into physical vs. chemical changes. This investigation can last between 1-10 days (or more), depending on how you structure the activities.

We used small pumpkins to investigate the physical properties of the pumpkin. Students worked in groups of 2-4 to investigate size, mass, color, shape, texture, hardness, and density of the pumpkin.

We used a large class pumpkin to investigate physical vs. chemical changes. We also used the large pumpkin to discuss the physical properties of the inside of the pumpkin, such as smell.

Raving Reviews - Sampler Opinion Writing Unit on Book Reviews

This product is a small piece of my Book Review Unit that is growing larger than I imagined! In my 4th grade classroom, we completed a small Opinion Writing Unit on Book Reviews. My kids LOVED it! I began this unit by explaining to my students that “reviews” are a special type of Opinion Writing that a writer writes based on their experience. There are reviews on EVERYTHING! Restaurants, Movies, Video Games, EVERYTHING! I also told my students a funny little story about when I went to try a new Chinese restaurant by my new house and found that my mother had written a review- and it was not a good one! Needless to say, I tried somewhere else. My students got a nice chuckle out of that and it was a nice way to get them excited about Book Reviews. I then showed them the website Crixut.com, which are Movie Reviews written by kids. Even though they are movie reviews, they are excellent examples of a Review and Opinion Writing written by kids. This is just an idea to help you get Book Reviews & Opinion Writing up and running in your classroom.
This sampler includes:

“Building a Book Review” Anchor Chart- This helps to explain the structure of a Book Review. I have included two versions depending on the needs of your classroom. Their essays could be 4 or 5 paragraphs.

“A Book Review” (stepped out version) - This version is for those students who need a little more scaffolding or you could use this as a homework assignment or in a center.

“Planning my Book Review” - a planner for your students to organize their writing Boxes and Bullets style. There are two of these planners, one for a 4 paragraph essay and one for a 5 paragraph essay.

“A Book Review” Publishing Paper- this is the final landing spot for their Book Review with a small window for them to include an illustration of the book cover.

“Bookagram” – an Instagram inspired book recommendation sheet. If you are interested in purchasing this product alone, please see my Bookagram product.
