This is a bundle of the 1st and 2nd Grade ELA Morning Work.

How can you cover a LOT of critical content in a LITTLE amount of time? This ELA morning work is a unique way to get your students warmed up in the morning that helps incorporate the 2nd and 3rd Grade Language Standards, Grammar, Vocabulary Practice, and Reading Comprehension skills.

About this resource:

The bundle includes morning work for the months of August - June. Each month includes 4-5 weeks of morning work. The morning work is focused on ELA 1st and 2nd Grade Common Core Standards. Each day has a thematic structure to cover Language Standards, Grammar, as well as enhance Vocabulary and Comprehension skills.

Meaningful Monday: Monday is focused on making meaning. Tasks will focus on synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary words, and context clues. Some tasks may require students to make meaning in the text (inference, message, adages, proverbs, etc.) or build vocabulary skills.

Text Structure Tuesday: Tuesdays will have a paragraph that requires students to identify the text structure, signal words, and a question or two related to the main idea, author's perspective, or vocabulary.

Wordy Wednesday: Wednesday is all about working with words. Tasks include working spelling sorts, phonics activities, homophones, and other word work.

Throwback Thursday:Thursday is all about grammar usage and conventions.

Fluency Friday: Friday is dedicated to building fluency. In upcoming months, Fluency Friday may become Figurative Friday. These tasks include working with various types of figurative language including similes, metaphors, idioms, and more!

What are the reading and writing text sets?

1. Google Slides/PowerPoint: This is an interactive teaching presentation to use to teach the skills. The Google Slides and PowerPoints help you teach or review the skill. There are three versions included in both PowerPoint & Google Slides. The slide presentation is organized so that you can:

  1. Model the Skill
  2. Let's Try It! (Active Engagement)
  3. Independent Practice (Exit Slip)

Version 1: (Teaching Slides) These slides include transitions so that you can discuss the answers before they appear. The answers are also in the notes section of the slideshow.

Version 2: (Student Slides)  These slides can be used if you are teaching virtually or if you want to use this as a review and have students complete on their own.

Version 3: (Answer Key) This slide has all the answers. 

2. Graphic Organizers: There are 6 different versions of a chart to make inferences. These can be used with any book or story.

3. Reading Posters: One reading poster for making inferences and another with thinking stems.

4. Reading Comprehension Passages + Questions: There a total of 5 Reading Comprehension Passages & Questions. The questions are all based on making inferences.

5. Exit Slips: Each exit slip can be printed out 2 per page. The Exit Slips are also available in Google Forms. The exit slips are multiple choice or short response.

6. Reading Activities: 5 practice pages for students to practice making inferences.

7. Clues & Conclusions: An activity for students to use clues to make an inference/draw a conclusion.

However, it is rooted in providing a foundation for the elements of story that are so crucial to reading comprehension. Teaching and consistently revisiting the elements of story helps children hold on to the stories as their books get longer and texts get harder.

6. Character Motivation Match: This matching activity is perfect for a reading center or can even be used as a notebook activity. Prep: Print on colored paper (optional) and laminate (optional). Cut each puzzle piece into two parts. Store in a Ziploc bag and use as a reading center or as a group activity. There are a total of 12 pieces with the following character motivations: fear, pride, curiosity, freedom, desire, compassion, anger, guilt, greed, love, peer pressure, and jealousy.
