Teach Me About ME! - A Guided Family Member Interview

This product came as a result of my first year teaching 5th grade. I found that my 5th graders had difficulty with friendships and social skills in general. Can’t we say this about MANY kids, no matter what their age, abilities, ethnicity, or gender?

Around the Thanksgiving holidays, I knew something had to be done. Over the Thanksgiving break I sent this home for homework. Since I knew they would be with their family (hopefully) and possibly be around family members they do not see very often. I pictured students connecting with their family members asking these questions and finding out more about themselves and hopefully they would bring this insight back with them after the break. I’m not sure this assignment changed the world, but when I read over their interviews it warmed my heart and helped change my classroom.

I found this assignment had 3 major benefits:

Allowed for honest conversations between families that may not have existed otherwise.

Students became more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses.

I gained insight into the relationships students have with their family member’s based on the response, as well as insight into how students feel about themselves.

Upon completion of this assignment, you can use this as a more in-depth goal-setting tool. Also, this could be used as a conversation tool to help students connect with their peers and improve relationships in the classroom.

Converting Units of Measurement Task Cards {Spring into Measurement!}

About the Product:

This product comes with 48 colorful Spring-Themed Task Cards for Converting Units of Measurement. The Task Cards support the following 4th Grade Standards:

CCSS.4.MD.1.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including Km m, cm; kg, g; lb. oz; L, hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two column table.

CCSS.4.MD.1.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals. Represent fractional quantities of distance and intervals of time using linear models.

They can be printed in color or as grayscale black and white. I suggest laminating the cards and printing on card stock so they will last longer. However, I did not do this and printed on regular 8.5 x 11 and then laminated. This worked perfectly fine if you do not have card stock handy (as I did not-hindsight is 20/20, right?).

After laminating, you can use a book/binder ring to attach the chards. They can then become part of your Math Center as a rotation, small group, tutoring, or for review. Another suggestion for using this is to not expect students to complete all of the cards, especially your struggling students. A blank Answer Sheet is included that students can just write the number for each problem. This is wonderful to use as an early finisher task. Some of the problems require multiple steps, which will be useful with higher level students. My students still work on our Division is SNOW much fun! Task Cards when they finish an assignment, though the snow has long melted (or never arrived since we live in Florida). If you decided to print Black and White, these problems could also be glued in students’ math journal.

Converting Units of Measurement Task Cards {Spring into Measurement!}

This is one of my favorite Writing Units! Writing a Newspaper Article about the community, school, or class is a fun way for students to develop their writing skills, as well as connect with the world around them. The resources in this unit could be used to teach as a class Writing Unit, to create a class newspaper, a school newspaper, or in an after school club. Students will develop informational writing skills which support the Common Core Writing Anchor Standard 2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

This unit is fun for end of the year after testing is all over to remind students that writing is not just test prep and writing essays! Also, you might use this to create a Class Newspaper or Anthology to help preserve the year’s memories. Though this is a unit on writing a Newspaper Article, it could be extended to writing a blog, website article, magazine article, or other type of article. Writing about the news is not as simple as writing for a Newspaper anymore. This is why throughout the resources you may see varying terms such as Newspaper Article, Journalist, Reporter, Feature Article, etc.

What this Product Includes:
There are 3 separate documents included in a zipped file.

*Anchor Charts for the Writer’s Notebook (31 pages) These are half sheets which students can glue in to have the anchor charts at their fingertips.

*Anchor Charts Full Size (same content as above) (20 pages) which can be used:
-as a slide show when teaching the unit
-printed and laminated to post on bulletin board or Writing Center
-printed and put in sheet protectors compiled together on a book/binder rings

I use these charts as a slide show and then also print, put in sheet protectors, then assemble together on a binder/book ring to use when teaching a small group or support writers in working on something specific.

*Unit Lesson Plans- (15 pages) The lessons are brief and to the point to explain how to teach the unit or teaching point for the day. Please know that these lessons are absolutely not the only way the lessons could be taught, but to give teachers an idea if this is a new-to-you unit! They are meant to be in the form of a mini lesson for the Writer’s Workshop model, however are NOT written to those specific guidelines. They are more a general idea of what you would do for that lesson. There is also a page of listed texts and websites that would be useful in teaching this unit. Anything in blue is a clickable link that will take you to that specific website.

The lessons may take longer than one day or less than one day, depending on you and your students. The lessons can be arranged in any way which fits your students. Make these resources your own and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

This is an informational newspaper-style text perfect for teaching your

students about the history of Memorial Day. It may be used over a few days.

BINGO

The questions are in a bingo-style format. Students read the informational text about Memorial Day. Then, they answer questions on the bingo grid. The grid comes in 26 different versions. Having each student use a different version of the answer grid will allow you to reinforce the content of the informational text by playing a game of

bingo.

HOW TO PLAY:

The first page is an answer key, which can be used to play the game of bingo. Cut up each square, place them in a Ziploc bag or container of your choice, and call out questions. Students must answer the question correctly and have 5 in a row: up, down, or diagonally. Students can use counters or treats to keep track of the questions.

Cinco de Mayo Reading Comprehension Bingo

Math Morning Work Grades 1-5 {Bundle} | Distance Learning | Google Slides

This bundle includes all the monthly morning work for Grades 1-5 Math August-June. All of the months are 4-5 weeks long.

This resource is a unique way to get your students warmed up in the morning. The math is aligned to 5th Grade Common Core Standards and meant to be a review. If you teach 6th grade, this might also work for you depending on your students’ needs.

Each month contains 4-5 (except for August) weeks of math morning work, which will have a theme around the season, national holidays, or events associated with that particular month. The morning work is focused on Math with a sprinkle of Science, a pinch of grammar, and a dash of Daily/Weekly Updates to keep your students engaged and open doors for conversations. At the beginning of the year, the math will be mostly 4th Grade review and increase in difficulty as the year goes on. However, the morning work is intended to be a review to keep students engaged, build confidence, and complete with independence.

Each week follows the same routine. The focus for each day was created based on fundamental needs I noticed in my own classroom: Multiplication & Division, Number Sense, & Fractions (including Fractions & Decimals). While these are not the only areas addressed, they are the main focus. Each week follows the same routine and structure:

Multiplication Monday- Problems are centered around Multiplication.

Base Ten Tuesday- All about the Base of our Number System. These problems are centered around our number system and place value.

Wordless Wednesday- No Word Problems! Students have 3 problems without words.

Throwback Thursday- Review Day! Other days may offer a review problem, but Thursdays are typically focused on review. I also added problems from other standards such as Measurement, Data, and Geometry. There is also a short paragraph in which students Box the Verbs, Circle the adjectives, and Underline the nouns. There may also be a short sentence or paragraph in which students edit the sentence or answer a question after reading a short paragraph related to Social Studies or Science.

Fraction Fun Friday- Nothing says Fun Friday like Fractions! There is always a need to review fractions. By keeping it short, sweet and including a fun personal question, this may help build your students’ confidence in fractions while also keeping it fresh.

This interactive, printable booklet is a fun way for your students to study the state of Virginia. The booklet totals in 10 pages on the inside with a front and back cover. The pages are copied back to back and then folded to form a booklet in a brochure style format.

Students will research the following about the state of Virginia:

-State Capital
-State Symbols (Bird, Flower, Flag, Tree, Song, Dog, Nickname, Beverage, Insect, Seal, Wildflower, Fish, State Fossil). There is also a blank page for State Symbols so students can choose symbols they like.
-State History
-City History (Students can choose a city from the state or the teacher can assign each student a different city to give each brochure some variety.)
-Animals Native to the City
-Special Landmarks or Landforms
-Important People
-Goods or Resources from the Area

Throughout the booklet, there are boxes for each section in which students can draw and write about the state.

Students can use the planning page to gather their information and then transfer their information to the booklet as a final product. Students can be creative by drawing pictures of each symbol, landform, etc.

A rubric for grading purposes is included as well.
